Chapter Ten
After she finished eating, Tuck made her way toward Bastien. She knew it would probably be for the best if she did bond with him, since she wanted someone to know what was happening when she was with Penelope. Butâ
âYou are thinking of me,â Bastien teased, interrupting her thoughts.
She rolled her eyes as she went downstairs, carefully but swiftly making her way down the curved, stone stairway. âI canât wait to be with Penelope so that all I have to do is concentrate on her instead of a smug strigoi who wants to get in my pants.â
He laughed. âOh, Ms. Houston, there is plenty more I can do with you that does not involve a bed.â
Her pulse jumped at the suggestion. âReally? Had to go there, Bastien?â
His laughter at her reply died quickly, and her insides went tightâheâd found something.
âBastien?â She reached for his mind.
âCome to Thorneâs room, Tuck. There is something here you need to see.â
She followed his scent, finding the room several doors down the corridor to her right and around a corner. Just as she passed the door, Thorneâs power hit her as if it was a living thing. It washed over her in a heavy wave and she allowed it, not moving as she did. This was leftover power. A lot of leftover power.
When she couldnât take anymore, she blocked it out the best she could. The slayer in her rose up to the surface in response. What had he done in this room to leave so much of his power after death?
Bastien cleared his throat to grab her attention. She entered the room fully, and found that it was decorated more to Thorneâs style than the rest of the keepâmodern art, furniture, and décor. A mix of strong lines and sharp colors.
âThis is more like it,â she murmured as she walked the short distance to the bed, where Bastien was sitting. She stopped a few feet in front of him.
He held a gold and wooden box out to her when she stopped. It was open. Inside was a lock of raven hair tied with small, black ribbon. She looked at Bastien. âThis is Penelopeâs hair. Why would he have a lock of her hair?â
âIn order to strengthen and manipulate the protection she was unknowingly giving, he had to have a part of her here,â he explained. âHer hair was the easiest to take, and, no doubt, he took it under false pretenses, which concerned you in some way.â
âIndeed it did concern you,â came an angry female voice. âThis is why I needed you to go there. You must undo his deed with care, for I know not what else he dared.â
Tuck furrowed her eyebrows at the last line spoken. What else had Thorne dared? âPenelopeâ¦â
âI know not what lies next after you and your strigoi do as I need. Something Thorne has done is close to you. It is murky, I cannot seeâ¦â
Tuckâs hand went to her stomach unconsciously. When Penelope couldnât see something, it was cause to worry.
